How to Prepare, Engage, and Respond to a Public Library Resource Challenge
"With the heightened state of book banning nationally, I devised an instruction program intended for library staff in which I presented via Zoom. In this program, users reviewed steps that can be taken to engage with resource challenges, then practiced these steps by interacting with a concerned patron (another user) who wishes to challenge a chosen library resource. This practice was then swapped to allow both perspectives and experiences. These perspectives helped users understand how a patron may "...feel confident that their concerns will be taken seriously," while also following the Library Bill of Rights by “...challenge[ing] censorship in the fulfillment of their responsibility to provide information and enlightenment (ALA, 2022).”
